Community case study

Community project

Phumulele Secondary School

Phumelela Secondary School was built and developed to serve the surrounding communities of Rockdale, Nazareth and Hlalamnandi. The school has over 1000 students. The school infrastructure project was identified and adopted by Black Wattle Colliery through consultation with the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (“STLM”) and as a part of STLM’s Integrated Development Plan.

The project was included in Black Wattle Colliery’s Social and Labour Plan (“SLP”) for the year cycle 2017 to 2021. Several consultations were done with the STLM, the school principal, the school governing body, and the Department of Mineral Resourses and Energy. The STLM approved the final design plans for the development.

The school was completed in two stages. The first stage commenced in June 2018 and included the building of eight classrooms and eight ablution facilities. The second stage, the building of a school hall, commenced in January 2020. As part of the final stages of the development, paving was laid between the buildings, water tanks and pumps were installed, and electricity connections were completed. The final buildings were commissioned in June 2022.
